The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya - UOC (Open University of Catalonia) has been working on publishing and transforming teaching content in the university field since 1995, and since 1998 has had content oriented towards professional master's degree and post-graduate education. In a first phase, the content was published on paper only. In the year 2000, the UOC virtual campus began managing content, offering web content in almost all subjects. The UOC currently has pilot tests for transforming content, obtaining paper and web versions from a single source.
The UOC has now developed a new version of the virtual campus. From this experience based on usability and accessibility techniques comes the basis for participation in the A MEDIDA project. The UOC's R+D+I capability has multiplied thanks to participation in the consortium, so the content transformation tools to be developed cover formats that the UOC knows in depth (paper, web, SCORM, IMS) and other ones new to the UOC (DVD).
The intranet development team has already built up wide experience in content automation. Automation projects like the transfer of content to SCORM or the MAT (Learning Materials for All PROFIT 2004) jointly with Fundosa Teleservicios show its development capability.
The UOC also provides academic knowledge concerning usability and automatic translation. As for automatic translation, the Computational Linguistic research group already has experience in applying its developments in the specific field of creating automatic versions of curriculums and examinations in Catalan and Spanish. In the field of usability, since the year 2000 the research group on Human-Computer Interaction has already been applying observation, testing and focus group techniques and now has a methodology and the technical means to carry out user tests, with a portable laboratory allowing it to reach the user easily.
